According to Broward County authorities, the 22-year-old Florida man was arrested Wednesday night, June 20, and charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of rapper XXXTentacion.
Dedrik Devonshy Williams, 22, of Pompano Beach, was taken into custody shortly before 19:00. Wednesday, according to documents provided by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office. He was prosecuted for first degree murder and driving without a license, in addition to violating probation.
XXXTentacion (real name: Jaseh Onfroy) was killed Monday afternoon while leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The detectives stated that two armed men approached Onfroy and that the shooting could have been part of a robbery. It is unclear if the police are looking for a second suspect.
The 20-year-old rapper was a controversial but growing figure. At the time of his death, he was awaiting trial on charges of aggravated beating of a pregnant woman, domestic strangulation, illegal imprisonment, and falsification of witnesses. His ex-girlfriend detailed the alleged abuse, which she said took place both before and during her pregnancy, in a Miami New Times article published just weeks before Onfroy’s death.
Onfroy, who also did not plead to challenge previous allegations of armed robbery and home battering, was also known to fight with fans at his concerts and once recalled in an interview that he brutally assaulted a gay cellmate for looking at him. … Amid protests over its violent reputation, Spotify briefly removed XXXTentacion’s music from carefully selected playlists, but reinstated them after protests from well-known artists including Kendrick Lamar.
A number of well-known musicians, including Kanye West, J. Cole and Diplo, expressed their shock on social media after the rapper’s death.
